Samaria Gorge
The Samaria Gorge is the most famous hiking gorge in Europe, being part of the European path E4. Thousands of tourists walk down it in summer. For many this is the main purpose of their visit to Crete. The length is 15 km and the descent takes about 5-7 hours, depending on your pace.
Preveli
The area of Preveli is located about 35 km south of Rethymnon and 10 km east of Plakias. The beach of Preveli, also known as Lake Preveli or Phoenix, is located at the exit of the Great River that carries the waters of the imposing Kourtaliotiko Gorge and the Fratianos Gorge. It is one of the most famous beaches of South Crete and receives thousands of visitors every summer. In former times, it was a favourite destination for hippies.
Mpalos
The famous lagoon of Balos is located about 56 km northwest of Chania and 17 km northwest of Kissamos. Balos is certainly the most photographed beach of Crete, a favourite subject of all the tourist guides of Greece. It is famous for its turquoise waters, wild natural beauty and wonderful exotic scenery. In summer, the beach is overrun daily by hundreds of visitors, most of whom arrive by boat from Kissamos.
Kedrodasos
Kedrodasos is an amazing beach located 76km southwest of Chania and just 1km west of the famous beach at Elafonissi. The beach is filled with sea cedars and sand dunes, reminiscent of a tropical beach. If you find yourself on the beach, you should remember that the trees are very vulnerable to human interference and it is best to stay away from them.
Elafonisi
Elafonissi is located 76km southwest of the city of Chania at the southwesternmost tip of Crete. It is a narrow peninsula, which often “breaks” at the beginning, giving the feeling of a separate island. It is included in the network of Natura protected areas, as it is an ecosystem of exceptional ecological importance. Karete turtles nest here, as well as several dune animals.
